Everyone is already creative

They may have forgotten or had to push creativity aside, or had it stomped out. But it is inherent in all humans. The world is better when more people express creativity.

I've got two quotes and a song lyric I've been thinking on. Let's start with this one from Les Brown:

"The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step."

Since my corporate position was eliminated, I've been thinking a lot about what I love to do. I love helping people find and express creativity. But it's that first small step that keeps it all in the graveyard. Ironically the answer to "what even is my first step" is the first step.

The movement into the unknown is a creative act. It's hard to take that first step. Do you even know what that step is? Does it feel really uncomfortable to put things out into the world?

It all is for me. I'm still a work in progress, as they say. But the progress is the important part. Not any single thing you do, but the mindset and behavior of repeatedly touching on that edge of your comfort zone, and working with it, not against it to put a thing into the world.

I call this edgework. It's a scary and fascinating place to be with. Not in. You have to be with it. It's part of your systems.

Playing edgework reminds me of this song lyric:

"Following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been"

Not knowing the destination is scary and awesome when you sit with this on that edge. Follow your will - your intention and actions, and your wind - the unforeseen effects of playing at your edge you may just go where you've not been.
